Life isn’t always slow, is it? Some weeks feel like a whirlwind, with too much to do and too little time to pause. But even during the busiest times, I’ve found that it’s possible—and important—to hold onto the principles of slow living, even in small, simple ways.

Here are a few things I turn to when life feels hectic but I still want to stay connected to the values of mindfulness, simplicity, and balance:
1. A Few Quiet Minutes with a Cup of Herbal Tea
No matter how much I have on my plate, I always take a moment to make herbal tea—not just for the comfort it brings, but for the ritual of it. Boiling the water, steeping the herbs, and cradling the warm mug in my hands helps me to pause and center myself, even if it’s just for five minutes. I like to sit by a window, watching the world outside, and let my mind rest for a while. My go-to favorites are thyme or mint—they instantly calm my nerves.
2. Journaling: Emptying My Mind Onto Paper
When my thoughts feel scattered, I pick up my journal. I don’t try to write anything profound—just a stream of whatever’s on my mind. Writing things down clears my mental clutter and helps me feel more in control of my day. Sometimes, I jot down three simple things I’m grateful for, which shifts my focus away from stress and onto what’s good.
3. A Walk, Even if It’s a Short One
I’ll admit that finding time for a long, leisurely walk isn’t always realistic during busy weeks. But even a ten-minute stroll makes a difference. Just stepping outside, feeling the fresh air, and hearing the sounds of nature around me slows my pace and reminds me of what matters.

4. Doing Nothing (Yes, Really!)
This one is the hardest for me, but it’s also the most rewarding. When I feel overwhelmed, I let myself stop completely for five minutes. No phone, no to-do list, no distractions—just sitting quietly, breathing deeply, and letting my thoughts settle. It feels indulgent in the moment, but afterward, I find I’m much calmer and more focused.
5. Finding Joy in Small Moments
I try to notice the tiny, beautiful things around me, even when life is chaotic. The soft glow of sunlight on my desk, the smell of dinner cooking, the sound of laughter from the next room—these fleeting moments remind me to stay present and enjoy what’s right in front of me.
Why These Practices Matter
Slow living isn’t about having endless free time or a perfectly calm life. It’s about making intentional choices, even in the busiest seasons, to find peace and balance. These small practices help me stay grounded and remind me that slow living is possible, no matter how hectic life feels.
