Overcoming Sewing Fear: Cutting Fabric for My Winter Dress

In my last post, I promised to cut my fabric the next day. But I have to admit—I didn’t. I was too nervous! The fear of making mistakes held me back.

After taking time to relax during my Christmas staycation, I finally worked up the courage to make the first cut. And guess what? It wasn’t as scary as I thought!

Today, I’ll share my progress, give tips for hesitant beginners, and break down the costs of this budget-friendly project.

How I Cut the Pattern Pieces

Earlier this week, I traced the pattern onto paper. Today, I laid out my fabric, pinned everything in place, and finally made that first cut. It was such a relief to see the pieces take shape!

Beginner Tips for Cutting Fabric

✂ Use sharp fabric scissors for clean cuts.
📌 Pin the pattern securely to prevent shifting.
🪡 Cut on a flat surface for accuracy.

If you’re nervous, take your time. Mistakes are normal when learning. My staycation helped—I could sew at my own pace without stress.

Sewing on a Budget: Material Costs Breakdown

I bought everything at Látky Mráz in Štěrboholy, where I found great deals. If you’re on a budget, watch for sales, check thrift stores, or use leftover fabric.

Here’s what I spent:

  • Fabric: 2.74 meters (139.9 CZK/m) → 383 CZK
  • Stretch Needles: 29 CZK
  • Elastic for Waistband: 8 CZK
  • Thread (2 rolls): 28 CZK
  • Total Cost: 448 CZK (~17.8 EUR / 18.5 USD)

Not bad for a custom-made winter dress!

Enjoying My Staycation Sewing
