Exploring Spiš Through Film: Unedited Images

A few months ago, I finally picked up my second roll of film from the lab. This time, I used color film, which felt like a nice change from my usual black and white. I’m not someone who rushes things—whether it’s shooting, developing, or sharing—so the whole process has taken its natural time. The photos themselves are from a trip I took in late winter of this year, and going through them now feels like revisiting that quiet period.

Most of the images on the roll are personal, featuring my family, so I’m keeping those private. But I want to share three photos from that same roll, all taken during one trip to Spiš, a beautiful region in eastern Slovakia. These pictures represent some of the highlights of the area and remind me of the atmosphere during that cold but calm time of the year.

The first photo shows Spiš Castle, one of the largest castle ruins in Central Europe.

The second picture is of the cathedral on Spišská Kapitula.

The third image is of the clock tower on Spišská Kapitula.

Shooting on film encourages me to slow down and think carefully about each shot. I don’t have the luxury of dozens of quick snaps like I do with my smart phone. Each photo requires intention. That mindset changes how I see the world through the lens—it’s less about capturing everything and more about choosing moments that really matter.

When the roll finally comes back from the lab, the anticipation is always a mix of excitement and nervousness. The colors, the grain, the small imperfections—all of these add to the authenticity of the images and remind me of the film’s unique character.

The three photos I’m sharing with you today are straight from the film scanner, without any edits or filters. I hope they give you a small window into my trip to Spiš and the quiet winter days there.

Thank you for stopping by to see these. If you want to check out my first roll of film I shared some of the photos in the blog post before. If you have experience with film photography or have visited Spiš, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
